Since our founding in 1985, we have been dedicated to providing the highest standards of care for adults with complex mental health challenges. As we’ve grown, expanded, and embraced new approaches to care, we’ve recognised the need for our brand to reflect the journey we’ve been on and the future we envision.
In 2024, we took an exciting step forward by evolving our brand identity. This change wasn’t just about refreshing our look—it was about capturing the essence of who we are today and where we’re headed. Our new brand identity better communicates the values and mission we hold dear, while modernising our image to align with the innovative care and support we provide.

Why We’ve Evolved
Our journey has been one of growth and transformation. What began as a single care home in York has grown into a network of homes and recovery services that offer unique pathways to independence and recovery. Over the years, we’ve expanded our services to include therapeutic communities, mental health recovery programs, and bespoke support for clients living independently.
As our services evolved, it became clear that our brand needed to evolve too. We needed an identity that truly represented the scope of what we offer today—a humanistic, recovery-centred approach to mental health care that empowers our clients to live fulfilling lives. Our new brand reflects this, embodying the warmth, support, and professionalism that Amitola Communities is known for.
Our Story
Amitola Communities was founded with a simple but profound mission: to create safe, supportive spaces where adults with complex mental health needs could thrive. Penny and Dale Graver, both qualified mental health nurses, opened Gravers Care Home in 1985. They were soon joined by Dale’s sister, Lynne Dexter, who opened The Dexters in 1986. Together, they expanded their vision in 1995 by opening Christmas Lodge.
Today, these care homes continue to provide a nurturing, therapeutic environment for our residents. Alongside this, we’ve developed a recovery pathway that includes Recovery House, One One Eight, and community-based services like Theravada and Feversham Lodge. These services offer holistic support for those on their journey to greater independence.

Our clients are not defined by their mental health difficulties; instead, we focus on helping them achieve their life goals.
